Alaska is a state in the United States of America, in the northwest of the North American continent. As of 2007, the population was 683,478 with approximately 50% residing along the Anchorage metropolitan areas.
The U.S. Senate approved the purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million at 2 cents per acre, about 5 cents per hectare. When adjusted for inflation, the total sum paid equates to approximately $360 million in 2008 dollars. The land went through several administrative changes before becoming an organized territory on May 11, 1912 and the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
List of Alaska Routes
Alaska has few road connections compared to the rest of the U.S. The state's road system covers a relatively small area of the state, linking the central population centers and the Alaska Highway, the principal route out of the state through Canada. The state capital, Juneau, is not accessible by road, only a car ferry, which has spurred several debates over the decades about moving the capital to a city on the road system, or building a road connection from Haines. The western part of Alaska has no road system connecting the communities with the rest of Alaska.
One unique feature of the Alaska Highway system is the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, an active Alaska Railroad tunnel recently upgraded to provide a paved roadway link with the isolated community of Whittier on Prince William Sound to the Seward Highway about 50 miles southeast of Anchorage. At nearly 2.5 miles (4.0 km) the tunnel was the longest road tunnel in North America until 2007.[43] The tunnel is the longest combination road and rail tunnel in North America.

One must be at least 14 years old to apply for a learner’s permit to be eligible for a provisional license; the driver must hold the permit for a minimum of 6 months of supervised driving.
Every applicant is required to pass a written exam and vision test in order to obtain the permit. You then must hold the learners permit for 6 months prior to applying for a provisional driver's license.
Prepare for the Written Test
The Alaska’s DMV requires that all applicants must pass the written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.

Do you need a Commercial Driver License in Alaska?
CDL Endorsements are required for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. If you live in Alaska and drive a Class A, B or C commercial vehicle, you must have an Alaska Commercial Driver License (CDL).
To operate a commercial vehicle in one of the following classifications, you should have an Alaska CDL Endorsement.
Class A License - This classification applies only to combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
Class B License - This class includes single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow must not exceed 10,000 pounds.
Class C License – In this class vehicles are designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials, which do not meet the criteria for Class A or B above fall under this classification.
Those exempted from the commercial driver licensing requirements include drivers of recreational,
- Military and emergency vehicles,
- Farm vehicles are exempt if controlled and operated by a farmer, used to transport agricultural products or machinery to and from a farm, not used in for-hire or contract carrier operations, and if driven no further than 150 miles from the farm.
Alaska CDL Skills Tests
If you pass the required knowledge tests, you can then take the CDL skills tests. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:
- Pre-trip inspection,
- Basic vehicle control, and
- On-road driving.
You should take all these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: You will be tested to see whether your vehicle is safe to drive. You will be asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle and explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why.
Basic Vehicle Control: You will be tested on your skill to control the vehicle. You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it, etc, within a defined area. These areas will be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar to it. The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done.
On-road Test:You will be tested on your skill of how safely you can drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. The situations may include left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.
What are the few other Requirements for a CDL?
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require drivers to pass a physical examination once every 2 years. The main physical requirements include
- Good hearing,
- 20/40 vision with or without glasses or corrective lenses, and
- A 70-degree field of vision in each eye and drivers must not be colorblind.
What should you bring to the Department Of Public Safety?
Ensure that you have all of the required identification documents before heading to the Alaska DPS. Bring your
- Current driver license,
- A Department of Transportation Physical Examination Form, and
- Your social security card.
