The State of Colorado is a state located in the Rocky Mountain region of the United States of America. Colorado may also be considered to be a part of the Western and Southwestern regions of the United States. Get your Driver's Permit
If this was your first driver's license, then you will need to apply for a Colorado driver's education or driver's awareness permit which requires a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
Then you will receive a valid driver's education or driver's awareness permit, you will then need to pass a road skills test and vision test to receive a Colorado minor driver's license.
Applicants under 18 must have held a learners permit for 12 months and must present a certificate of completion for the required 50 hours of supervised driving time before taking the road skills test.
Especially a 6-hour Behind the Wheel (BTW) certificate is required, for any minor who is under the age of 16 years 6 months at the time they apply for their license.
Prepare for the Written Knowledge Test
The Colorado DMV requires that all applicants must pass a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. If you fail the exam, some must take the test again and will be charged a re-examination fee.
New Colorado Residents
New residents with an out-of-state license must obtain a Colorado driver's license upon establishing a permanent residence in Colorado. When heading to the DMV, take your former state license as you will be required to surrender it in order to obtain the new license.
There is no written exam or road skills testing required to change a valid out-of-state license to a Colorado driver's license, you will need to pass the vision test.
If the license is expired for more than one year, both the written and driving tests are required also additionally identification may be required if the license is not presented.
International Drivers
Colorado honors a valid foreign driver's license with an international driving permit. After becoming a resident of the State, you'll be required to convert to a Colorado license and pass the written exam and road skills test.
Required Paperwork
Before you head to the Colorado DMV Office, make sure you have all of the following required documents to get your driver's license/learners permit:
  • Colorado ID and Required Documents,
  • Provide proof of identity and residence address,
  • Completed Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship (DR2460),
  • Completion of the 4-hour Driver Awareness Program or 30 hours classroom study course within 6 months of applying for your Driver's Instruction Permit,
  • Payment for testing and issuance fees.
On the Road
Once your licensing requirements have been met, you will receive your new:
  • Restricted Driver's License if 16 to 18 years of age, which is valid for 5 years.
  • Full Driver's License if 18 and older which is valid for 5 years.

Do you need a Commercial Driver License in Colorado?
CDL Endorsements are required for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. If you live in Colorado and drive a Class A, B or C commercial vehicle, then you must have a Colorado Commercial Driver License (CDL).
To operate a commercial vehicle in one of the following classifications, you should have a Colorado CDL Endorsement.
Class A License - This classification applies only to combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds; provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
Class B License - This class includes only to single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow must not exceed 10,000 pounds.
Class C License - Vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials, that do not meet the criteria for Class A or B above fall under this classification.

Colorado CDL Skills Tests
If you pass the required knowledge tests, you can then take the CDL skills tests. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:
  • Pre-trip inspection,
  • Basic vehicle control, and
  • On-road driving.
You should take all these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: You will be tested to see whether your vehicle is safe to drive. You will be asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle and explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why.
Basic Vehicle Control: You will be tested on your skill to control the vehicle. You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it, etc, within a defined area. These areas will be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar to it. The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done.
On-road Test: You will be tested on your skill of how safely you can drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. The situations may include left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.
What are the few other Requirements for a CDL?
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations require drivers to pass a physical examination once every 2 years. The main physical requirements include;
  • Good hearing,
  • 20/40 vision with or without glasses or corrective lenses, and
  • A 70-degree field of vision in each eye and drivers must not be colorblind.
What should you take to the Department Of Motor Vehicles?
Before you leave to the Colorado DOR Office, make sure you have all the required documents to get CDL:
Take your
  • Current driver license,
  • A Department of Transportation Physical Examination Form, and
  • Your social security card.

What fees should you pay?
Colorado Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - $35.00, which is valid for four years. Any license with a motorcycle endorsement will have a $2.00 surcharge added to the overall fee.
Colorado Instruction Permit - $14.00, valid for 1year from the date of issue unless there is a change in age group from minor to adult.

First Time Motorcycle Riders
Anyone who wants to drives a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or motorcycle instruction permit.Under Colorado DMV guidelines.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, should pass the written test at a Driver's License office, purchase a motorcycle instruction permit, pass a drive test at a Driver's License office or with a 3rd-party tester and pay the fee to add the endorsement to your license.
Colorado will waive your skills test and issue you a license if you complete an approved basic motorcycle rider safety course. This course last from two to six weeks and includes
  • Classroom instruction as well as
  • Driver training in a controlled,off-street environment.
When you successfully complete the course, you will be eligible for your motorcycle driver's license without having to take your state's road test.
After successful completion of the course, present your MSF certification card at a Driver's License office. When you present your MSF certification card at a Driver's License office, the written and drive tests are waived. Pay the fee to add the endorsement to your license.
As per Colorado law, minors under the age of 18 are required to purchase and hold a motorcycle instruction permit for 12 months before adding the motorcycle endorsement to their license. Minors under the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision of the MSF motorcycle instructor at all times while driving a motorcycle.
Prepare for the Motorcycle License Written Test
The Colorado DMV requires that all applicants should pass
  • A written exam on traffic signs,
  • Motor vehicle laws, and
  • Safe driving techniques.
If you fail the exam, you have to wait at least until the next day to take the test again and with the charge for re-examination fee.
Required Paperwork
Before you leave to the Colorado DMV Office, make sure you have the required documents to get your motorcycle license; like
  • Birth certificate issued in any state,
  • Drivers license or instruction permit issued in another state,
  • U.S. passport,
  • U.S. military ID card i.e. like active duty, retired, or reserve,
  • Colorado ID card,
  • Social Security Number, if issued,
  • Documents from a court of record,
  • Marriage certificate,
  • Parental Consent Form, which must be signed in the presence of a driver license examiner or notarized if parent or guardian will not be present.
On the Road
When your licensing requirements have been met, a Class M endorsement will be added to your driver's license. The safe operation of a motorcycle requires
  • Practiced skill,
  • Knowledge,
  • A respectful understanding of the limitations imposed by the operator,
  • The machine, and
  • The environment.
