The State of Georgia is a state in the United States and was one of the original Thirteen Colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution. It was the last of the Thirteen Colonies to be established, in 1733. It was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution, on January 2, 1788. It seceded from the Union on January 21, 1861 and was one of the original seven Confederate states. It was the last state to be readmitted to the Union, on July 15, 1870. Georgia is the ninth-largest state in the nation by population, with an estimated 9,544,750 residents as of July 1, 2007. It is also the third-fastest-growing state in terms of numeric gain and fifth in terms of percent gain, adding 202,670 residents at a rate of 2.2 percent. From 2006 to 2007, Georgia had 18 counties among the nation's 100 fastest-growing counties, the most of any state. Georgia is also known as the Peach State and the Empire State of the South. Atlanta is the most populous city, and the capital.
Transportation in Georgia is overseen by the Georgia Department of Transportation, a part of the executive branch of the state government. Georgia's major Interstate Highways are I-75 and I-85. On March 18, 1998, the Georgia House of Representatives passed a resolution naming the portion of Interstate Highway 75, which runs from the Chattahoochee River northward to the Tennessee state line the Larry McDonald Memorial Highway.
HJAIA's 398 foot-tall control towerGeorgia's principal airport is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), the world's busiest passenger airport. Georgia has one hundred seven public-use airports, nine of which are commercial-aviation airports and ninety-eight which are general-aviation airports. Two of the state's important airports are Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which serves over 1,700,000 passengers each year and DeKalb Peachtree Airport in Chamblee, Georgia.

Get your Driver's Permit
If you are applying for driver’s license the first time, then you will need to apply for a Georgia learner's permit which requires a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. Once you receive a valid learner’s permit, you will then need to pass a road skill test and vision test to receive a Georgia driver's license.
Applicants under 18 must hold a learner’s permit for one year to one day before taking the road skills test.
From January 1, 2007, 16 years old must be in compliance with Joshua's Law, which requires Georgia approved Driver's Education before license issuance. At age 17, Driver's Education is not required.
Prepare for the Written Knowledge Test
The Georgia DMV requires that all applicants must pass a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
If you fail the exam, have to take the test again with the charge for re-examination.
New Georgia Residents
New residents with an out-of-state license must obtain a Georgia driver's license within 30 days of permanent residence in Georgia. Be sure to bring the license from your former state as you will be required to surrender it in order to obtain the new license in the DMV office.
There is no written exam or road skills testing required to change a valid out-of-state license to a Georgia driver's license, however you will need to pass the vision test.
A person surrendering an out of state learner's permit for a Georgia permit must meet all other licensing requirements.
International Drivers
Nonresident drivers over the age of 16 years who have a valid driver's license issued by their home country may operate motor vehicles upon the highways of this State when their license is in their immediate possession.
30 days after the nonresident driver becomes a Georgia resident, then they must apply for a Georgia driver's license and pass all of the required tests including the written exam, vision screening and road skills test.
Required Paperwork
Before heading to the Georgia DMV Office, make sure you have all of the required documents to get your driver's license/learner permit:
- Two forms of identification, which must be original or certified
- Social Security Number
- Signature of a parent or legal guardian with a Georgia License or ID card
- Proof of school enrollment i.e. Georgia DDS Certificate of Attendance form
- Payment for license fees.
On the Road
The minimum age for a restricted license is 16 years old, and not allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 6 AM.
For the first 6 months, the licensee is not allowed to have passengers. For the next 6 months, they are allowed to have only one passenger under the age of 21. After that, they are allowed up to 3 passengers.
Both the nighttime driving and passenger restrictions are lifted after the licensee turns 18 years old.
After all your licensing requirements have been met, you will receive your new:
- Restricted Driver's License if 16 years to 18 years of age, which is valid for 5 years.
- Full Driver’s License if 18 years of age and older, which is valid for up to 8 years.

Do you need a Commercial Driver License in Georgia?
CDL Endorsements are required for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. If you live in Georgia and drive a Class A, B or C commercial vehicle, you must have a Georgia Commercial Driver License (CDL).
To operate a commercial vehicle in one of the following classifications, you must have a Georgia CDL Endorsement.
Class A License - This classification applies only to combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
Class B License - This class includes single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow must not exceed 10,000 pounds.
Class C License – This class vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials, that do not meet the criteria for Class A or B above fall under this classification.
Georgia CDL Skills Tests
If you pass the required knowledge tests, you can then take the CDL skills tests. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:
- Pre-trip inspection,
- Basic vehicle control, and
- On-road driving.
You should take all these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: You will be tested to see whether your vehicle is safe to drive. You will be asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle and explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why.
Basic Vehicle Control: You will be tested on your skill to control the vehicle. You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it, etc, within a defined area. These areas will be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar to it. The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done.
On-road Test: You will be tested on your skill of how safely you can drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. The situations may include left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.
What are the other Requirements for a CDL?
Persons 18 to 21 may obtain a commercial driver's license, but will be restricted to drive in Georgia only. On or after the 21st birthday, the driver must go to the examination station and the Georgia Only restriction will be lifted.
The main physical requirements include;
- Good hearing,
- 20/40 vision with or without glasses or corrective lenses, and
- A 70-degree field of vision in each eye and drivers must not be colorblind.
What should you take to the Department Of Motor Vehicles?
- Take your current driver license,
- Your social security card,
- Georgia ID and Required Documents.
What fees should you pay?
- The application fee for a CDL is $35.00.
- There is no fee for veterans or school bus drivers.
