Get your Driving Permit
If this was your first driver's license, then you will need to apply for a Louisiana learner's permit which requires a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
When you receive a valid learner's permit, you will then need to pass a road skills test and vision tests to receive a Louisiana driver's license.
Applicants under 18 must hold a learner’s permit for 180 days before taking the road skills test and their parent or legal guardian must certify that they have received at least 50 hours which includes 15 hours of night driving, with supervised driving instruction.
Applicants 17 years of age or above who have not entered the graduated licensing program can apply for full Class E license or a learner's permit upon completion of a full driver's education course or a six hour pre-licensing course.
In case of an out-of-state applicant 16 years of age who has had a license or permit for a minimum of 180 days may be eligible to bypass the learners permit stage and be issued an intermediate license.
Prepare for the Written Test
The Louisiana DPS requires that all applicants must pass a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. If you fail the exam, you have to take the test again with a re-examination fee.
New Louisiana Residents
If you move into Louisiana from another State, you must apply for a Louisiana driver's license within 30 days after becoming a resident. You return your previously issued out-of-state driver's license, and fill out an application and pass an eye screening test.
If your out-of-state driver's license has been expired for more than one year, you will be required to pass written exam and vision test.
An out-of-state applicant who is16 years of age, who had an license or permit for a minimum of 180 days may be eligible to bypass the learner's permit stage and be issued an intermediate license.
Out-of-State permit holders transferring to Louisiana must transfer their permit and be issued a Louisiana permit before applying for a Louisiana Driver License.
International Drivers
Immigration documents must be verified by the Office of Motor Vehicles for status prior to issuance of a Louisiana Driver's License or Identification Card.
If eligible and applicant has an out-of-country driver's license, the applicant must pass the written, vision, and driving skills tests unless Louisiana has a reciprocal agreement with the applicant's home country.
Required Paperwork for your Drivers License
Before you leaving to the Louisiana DMV Office, make sure you have all the required documents to get your driver's license/learner permit:
  • Louisiana ID and Required Documents,
  • Identification and Proof of Age,
  • Social Security Number,
  • Parental Consent,
  • Written consent of parent/guardian.
On the Road
To receive your restricted driver’s license the minimum age for a restricted license is 16 years old, and not allowed to drive between the hours of 11 PM to 5 AM. With a restricted license, you can have no more than one passenger younger than 21 between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The minimum age for a full unrestricted driver's license in Louisiana is 17 years old.
Once all the licensing requirements are been met, you will receive your new:
  • Restricted Driver's License if 16 years to 17 years of age, which is valid for 4 years.
  • Full Driver’s License if 17 years of age and older, which is valid for 4 years.

Do you need a Commercial Driver License in Louisiana?
CDL Endorsements are required for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. If you live in Louisiana and drive a Class A, B or C commercial vehicle, you must have a Louisiana Commercial Driver License (CDL).
To operate a commercial vehicle in one of the following classifications, you must have a Louisiana CDL Endorsement.
Class A License (Combination Vehicles) - Any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000.
Class B License (Heavy Straight Vehicles) - Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, else any such vehicle towing a trailer/vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class C License (Small Vehicles) - Any single vehicle or combination of vehicles, that meets neither the definition of Class A or Class B but that is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver is used.
A vehicle or combination of vehicles which is in excess of 10,000 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds may require a Class D Chauffeur's license.
Louisiana CDL Skills Tests
If you pass the required knowledge tests, you can then take the CDL skills tests. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:
  • Pre-trip inspection,
  • Basic vehicle control, and
  • On-road driving.
You should take all these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: You will be tested to see whether your vehicle is safe to drive. You will be asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle and explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why.
Basic Vehicle Control: You will be tested on your skill to control the vehicle. You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it, etc, within a defined area. These areas will be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar to it. The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done.
On-road Test: You will be tested on your skill of how safely you can drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. The situations may include left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.
What are few other Requirements for a CDL?
Persons 18 to 21 may obtain a commercial driver's license, but will be restricted to drive in Georgia only. On or after the 21st birthday, the driver must go to the examination station and the Georgia Only restriction will be lifted.
The main physical requirements include:
  • Good hearing,
  • 20/40 vision with or without glasses or corrective lenses, and
  • A 70-degree field of vision in each eye and drivers must not be colorblind.
What should you take to the Department Of Motor Vehicles?
Visit the full service CDL issuing office with all of the proper identification requirements and the following items:
  • Your current, valid driver's license,
  • Your social security card or letter from SSA specifying your SSN,
  • Your completed, long form physical with medical examiners certificate,
  • Proof of insurance on your personal vehicles,
  • Pay $15 in cash for the application fee.

The costs may vary slightly.
  • A CDL physical is required,
  • Pay $15 for application fee,
  • Third Party Skills test is $60,
  • License fee - $41,
  • Additional endorsements - $5,
  • Applicable parish fee - not to exceed $3.

First Time Motorcycle Riders
Anyone who drives a motorcycle must have a Class M motorcycle license or motorcycle instruction permit, under Louisiana DMV guidelines,
Applicants must be 17 years of age, pass the motorcycle knowledge test, a sign test and a vision screening. The final step is to pass the motorcycle skills test where you will demonstrate your competency in motorcycle operation.
Louisiana will waive your skills test and issue you a license if you complete an approved basic motorcycle rider safety course. This course last from two to six weeks and includes
  • Classroom instruction as well as
  • Driver training in a controlled,off-street environment.
When you successfully complete the course, you will be eligible for your motorcycle driver's license without having to take your Louisiana road test.
Prepare for the Motorcycle License Written Test
The Louisiana DMV requires that all applicants should pass
  • A written exam on traffic signs,
  • Motor vehicle laws, and
  • Safe driving techniques.
If you fail the exam, you have to wait at least until the next day to take the test again and with the charge for re-examination fee.
Required Paperwork
Before you leave to the Louisiana DMV Office, make sure you have the required documents to get your motorcycle license; like
  • Birth certificate issued in any state,
  • Drivers license or instruction permit issued in another state,
  • U.S. passport,
  • U.S. military ID card i.e. like active duty, retired, or reserve,
  • Colorado ID card,
  • Social Security Number, if issued,
  • Documents from a court of record,
  • Marriage certificate,
  • Parental Consent Form, which must be signed in the presence of a driver license examiner or notarized if parent or guardian will not be present.
On the Road
When your licensing requirements have been met, a Class M endorsement will be added to your driver's license. The safe operation of a motorcycle requires
  • Practiced skill,
  • Knowledge,
  • A respectful understanding of the limitations imposed by the operator,
  • The machine, and
  • The environment.
