MASSACHUSETTS LINKS
STATES
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a state located in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It borders Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south, New York to the west, and Vermont and New Hampshire to the north. Most of its population of 6.4 million live in the Boston metropolitan area. The eastern half of this relatively small state is mostly urban and suburban, while Western Massachusetts is mostly rural. Massachusetts is the most populous of the six New England states. It ranks third among U.S. states in overall population density and fourth in GDP per capita.

Get your Driver's Permit
If this was your first driver's license, then you will need to apply for a Massachusetts learner's permit which requires a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
When you receive a valid learner's permit, you will then need to pass a road skills test and vision test to receive a Massachusetts Junior Operator's License.
Applicants under 18 must have held a learners permit for 6 consecutive months, completed a driver education training program approved by the Registrar, and logged 40 hours, which includes 30 hours if the junior operator completes a driver skills development program of supervised driving time before taking the road skills test.
New Massachusetts Residents
New residents with an out-of-state license must obtain a Massachusetts driver's license when you decide for a permanent residence in Massachusetts. When heading to the RMV, be sure to take the license from your former state as you will be required to surrender it in order to obtain the new license.
There is no written exam or road skills testing required to change a valid out-of-state license to a Massachusetts driver's license, but you will need to pass the vision test.
No person under the age of 16 may drive in Massachusetts. You can obtain a learner's permit at age 16, but you may not receive a Class D or a Class M driver's license until you are at least 16 1/2 and have had your permit in good standing for six consecutive months and have completed a driver education training program approved by the Registrar.
If the customer is under the age of 18, then must convert the out-of-state driver's education certificate or complete a driver's education course in Massachusetts.
If your out-of-state license has been expired for more than one year but less than four, you will be required to take a written test for the class license you are trying to transfer. If your license has been expired more than four years, a full test - written and road test and an eye test will be required.
International Drivers
If you are converting a license from a country other than Canada, Mexico or one of the US Territories, you must take the full - written and road - test plus the eye test.

You must be accompanied by a licensed operator who holds a valid license with the correct class and endorsements for the vehicle you are operating. Your permit must be with you while you are operating the vehicle.
Once you have passed the written permit test, you must call the RMV Telephone Center to schedule your road test. All road tests must be scheduled by the phone center. You cannot make a road test appointment in person.
A road test is always required when applying for a CDL license with any selected endorsement. If you already have a Class D license and are applying for a Class C license, a road test is required only if you selected passenger or air brakes endorsements.
To take the road test, you should bring a sponsor who has a valid CDL license with the proper endorsements for the vehicle class you are using. Your sponsor must also have a current DOT Medical Certificate.

These areas will be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar to it. The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done.
On-road Test: You will be tested on your skill of how safely you can drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. The situations may include left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways.
