NEVADA LINKS
STATES
Nevada is a state located in the western region of the United States of America. The capital is Carson City and the largest city is Las Vegas. The state's nickname is "The Silver State" due to the large number of silver deposits that were discovered and mined there. In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state to enter the union, and the phrase "Battle Born" on the state flag reflects the state's entry on the Union side during the American Civil War. Its first settlement was called Mormon Station. Nevada is the seventh-largest state in area, and geographically covers the Mojave Desert in the south to the Great Basin in the north. About 86% of the state's land is owned by the U.S federal government under various jurisdictions both civilian and military. As of 2006, there were about 2.6 million residents, with over 85% of the population residing in the metropolitan areas around Las Vegas and Reno. The state is well known for its easy marriage and divorce proceedings, legalization of gambling and, in a few counties, legalized brothels. The Loneliest Road in America, U.S. Highway 50.Interstate 15 passes through the southern tip of the state, serving Las Vegas and other communities. I-215 and spur route I-515 also serve the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Interstate 80 crosses through the northern part of Nevada, roughly following the path of the Humboldt River from Utah in the east and passing westward through Reno and into California. It has a spur route, I-580. Nevada also is served by several federal highways: US 6, US 50, US 93, US 95 and US 395. There are also 189 Nevada state highways. Nevada is one of a few states in the U.S. that does not have a continuous interstate highway linking its major population centers of Reno/Carson City and Las Vegas. Even the non-interstate federal highways aren't contiguous between its two largest metropolitan areas, though they are well marked by signs showing where to turn. The state is one of just a few in the country that allow semi-trailer trucks with three trailers—what might be called a "road train" in Australia. However, American versions are usually smaller, in part because they must ascend and descend some fairly steep mountain passes. Citizens Area Transit (CAT) is the public transit system in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The agency is the largest transit agency in the state and operates a network of frequent bus service, including the use of double-decker buses on the Las Vegas Strip. RTC RIDE operates a system of local transit bus service throughout the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area. Other transit systems in the state include Carson City's JAC. Most other counties in the state do not have public transportation at all. Additionally, a monorail system provides public transportation in the Las Vegas area. The Las Vegas Monorail line services several casino properties and the Las Vegas Convention Center on the east side of the Las Vegas Strip, with a possible future extension to McCarran Airport. McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas is one of the busiest airports in the nation. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport (formerly known as the Reno Cannon International Airport) is the other major airport in the state.

Get your Driver's Permit
If this was your first driver's license, you will need to apply for a Nevada learner’s permit which requires a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques.
When you receive a valid learner’s permit, then you will then need to pass a road skills test and vision test to receive a Nevada driver’s license.
You must be 16 years old and have to hold your learner's permit for a minimum of six months before applying for a regular license. Before taking the road skills test, applicants under the age of 18 have three options:
  • Attend a classroom course and complete 50 hours of behind-the-wheel experience; or
  • Complete an online course and 50 hours of behind-the-wheel experience; or
  • Complete 100 hours of driving experience. This option applies only if a classroom course is not offered within a 30-mile radius of your residence and you do not wish to complete a course online.
Prepare for the Written Knowledge Test
The Nevada DMV requires that all applicants must pass a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. But if you fail the exam, you have to take the test again with the charge of re-examination fee.
New Nevada Residents
New residents with an out-of-state license must obtain a Nevada driver's license within 30 days of their permanent residence in Nevada. When leaving to the DMV, be sure to take the license from your former state as you will be required to surrender it in order to obtain the new license.
There is no written exam or road skills testing required to change a valid out-of-state license to an NV driver's license, but you will need to pass the vision test.
If your prior U.S. license has been expired, suspended or revoked for more than one year, you must take all three tests - vision, knowledge and skills.
International Drivers
Foreign nationals temporarily in the U.S. may drive in Nevada for one year if they have a valid license from their home country accompanied by an International Driver's License.
If you have never been licensed in the U.S., you must take all three tests - vision, knowledge and skills.
Required Paperwork
Before you leave to the Nevada DMV Office, make sure you have all the required documents to get your driver's license/learner permit:

When your licensing requirements have been met, you will receive your new:

Do you need a Commercial Driver License in Nevada?
CDL Endorsements are required for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials. If you live in Nevada and drive a Class A, B or C commercial vehicle, you must have a Nevada Commercial Driver License (CDL).
To operate a commercial vehicle in one of the following classifications, you should have a Nevada CDL Endorsement.
Class A License - This classification applies only to combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.
Class B License - This class includes single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow must not exceed 10,000 pounds.
Class C License – This class includes vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials, that do not meet the criteria for Class A or B fall under this classification.
Nevada CDL Skills Tests
If you pass the required knowledge tests, you can then take the CDL skills tests. There are three types of general skills that will be tested:

  • Basic vehicle control, and
  • On-road driving.
You should take all these tests in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed.
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: You will be tested to see whether your vehicle is safe to drive. You will be asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle and explain to the examiner what you would inspect and why.
Basic Vehicle Control: You will be tested on your skill to control the vehicle. You will be asked to move your vehicle forward, backward, and turn it, etc, within a defined area. These areas will be marked with traffic lanes, cones, barriers, or something similar to it. The examiner will tell you how each control test is to be done.
On-road Test: You will be tested on your skill of how safely you can drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. The situations may include left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, curves, up and down grades, and single or multi-lane roads, streets, or highways. The examiner will tell you where to drive.
What are few other Requirements for a CDL?
You must be at least 21 years of age to be issued a CDL to operate a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce. Applicants between 18 and 20 years of age may be granted a CDL for intrastate commerce, but will not be granted the privilege to transport passengers for hire or transport hazardous materials requiring placards.
