The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, colloquially known as Rhode Island (/ro?d 'a?l?nd/ (help·info)), is a state in the New England region of the United States. It is the smallest U.S. state by area. Rhode Island borders Connecticut to the west, and Massachusetts to the north and east, as well as New York by sea to the southwest.
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA), which has its hub in downtown Providence manages local bus transit for the state, serving 38 out of 39 Rhode Island communities. RIPTA has 58 bus lines, 2 tourist trolley lines known as LINK, and a seasonal ferry to Newport. The southern terminus of the MBTA commuter rail Providence/Stoughton Line is also in downtown Providence and connects to Boston. Ferry services link Block Island, Prudence Island, and Hog Island to the Rhode Island mainland.
The Claiborne Pell Newport BridgeThe major airport is T. F. Green Airport in Warwick, though Logan International Airport in Boston is also used. The commuter rail is in the process of being extended to the airport, which will link by rail T.F. Green to Providence and Boston.
Interstate 95 runs diagonally across the state connecting major population centers, while the auxiliary interstate 295 provides a bypass around Providence. Narragansett Bay has a number of suspension bridge crossings connecting Aquidneck Island and Conanicut Island to the mainland, most notably the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge and the Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge.
Get your Driver's Permit
You must be at least 16 years of age and show proof of completion of the 33 hours driver education course certified by the Community College of Rhode Island to apply for a Rhode Island Limited Provisional Driver's License.
If this was your first driver's license, then you will need to apply for a Rhode Island limited instructional permit which requires you to pass a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques in addition to vision test.
When you receive a valid limited instructional permit, you will then need to pass a road skills test to receive a Rhode Island driver’s license.
Applicants under the age of 18 must hold a learner’s permit for 6 months and show proof that you completed an approved driver education course, and complete an additional 50 hours, which includes 10 hours at night under supervised driving experience before taking the road skills test.
Prepare for the Written Knowledge Test
The Rhode Island DMV requires that all applicants must pass a written exam on traffic signs, motor vehicle laws and safe driving techniques. If you fail the exam, you must take the test again with the charge of re-examination fee.
New Rhode Island Residents
New residents with an out-of-state license must obtain a Rhode Island on their permanent residence in Rhode Island. Be sure to take the license from your former state as you will be required to surrender it in order to obtain the new license in the DMV office.
Your initial Rhode Island license will be valid for up to two years, expiring on your birthday. At that time you may renew it for five years.
If your out-of-state driver's license is expired for more than one year, you will be required to apply for an instruction permit as a new driver and pass all required tests.
International Drivers
Rhode Island always honors a valid foreign driver's license with an international driving permit for a period of one year. When your foreign license expires, you must apply for a Rhode Island learners permit and pass all required tests to receive a driver's license.
